Your New Best Friend

Image
RA.   What does it stand for?   Resident Assistant, also known as your new best friend.   They are students just like you.   They go to class, do their homework, and hangout with friends.   They live next door or just down the hall from you.   A RA is available to you 24 hours a day (but don’t wake them up if you don’t have to.)   They plan events as a chance for you to have fun and meet new people.   They are also there during the not so happy times.   If you want a room switch, need a shoulder to cry on, need advice about a class, or are struggling at adjusting to living with your new roommate your RA is your go to kind of pal.   They are available to help you.   In addition, to helping you there are there to keep you safe. Last year I was a RA in RiverView.   I had the opportunity to meet and get to know about 48 residents.   I was there through the tears and the fights, the smiles and laughter, but most important...

How to decode room assignments!

Image
Good Afternoon New Panthers,                 As summer quickly passes through and you all continue to receive your room assignments, I am sure you are wondering how to actually decode them! Once you log onto your myhousing@uwm account, scroll to the bottom of the screen.   Under the “2014-2015 Residence Hall Academic Year Contract“ heading, you should see a blue link with letters and numbers. This blue link is your assignment and if you click on that link, it will bring up a new page with your roommates and suitemates names. The person with the exact same room letter as you is your roommate and those listed with different room numbers are your suitemates.           Room assignments for Sandburg residents would look something like this “N2310A”. The letter N could be replaced with S, W or E just depending on the tower you were assigned to. The first two numbers would tell you what ...

No One Mourns The WICKED

We’re off to see the Wizard…The wonderful wizard of OZ… But what happened Before the wizard got there.    Wicked, an amazing musical claiming more than 35 awards, is in Milwaukee tells the story… “Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One - born with emerald green skin - is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good makes for.”  Wicked is an amazing and fun musical for all ages.   I watched a performance on Sunday and was stunned by the magnificence.   This great show is selling tickets fast so don’t wait to get your tickets !   You can also look into the lottery system for a cheaper way to see the show.

Dancing at Milwaukee

Image
Summerdances is a performance by over 30 UW-Milwaukee dancers.   The performances are site-specific meaning they are tailored and meant only for the spaces they are performed in.   Site-specific pieces are performance works inspired by the architecture and ecology of water found in the Cudahy Gardens of the Milwaukee Art Museum and the historic North Point Water Tower.   This year Summerdances can be viewed at two locations Milwaukee Art Museum Cudahy Gardens and North point Water Tower.  It is free and open to the public and an amazing opportunity to begin learning the potential of UWM students.  Summerdances can be viewed through out June 13-15.

Comet Cafe

Image
Happy Monday! Comet Café is nestled at 1947 N Farwell Ave in Milwaukee! It’s a small place that houses some of the friendliest and happiest Milwaukeeans (right behind UWM Housing )! It’s best to go early because it fills up quickly and with Comet’s slow food motto tables tend to be occupied for an extended amount of time. If you are waiting to be seated, mosey over to the display case filled with cupcakes and pies from a local shop called Honeypie . These will not disappoint, as each dessert is made completely from scratch daily with vegan options. I would suggest asking an employee to box up your dessert prior to being seated at a table, as these tend to sell out quickly on a busy night!             After pondering my own cupcake choice, I chose a malted milk ball cupcake (it was phenomenal). I was seated and without even opening my menu I asked the waitress Comet’s special. She suggested the meatloaf with beer gravy or the AJ’s ...
